Haris Mazhar · Your storekeeper

Hi, I'm Haris, a
storekeeper for
Shopify stores.

I keep an eye on your store so you don't have to.

Every Friday I'll tell you the truth about your store's week, in plain words. If something breaks in between, you'll hear it from me first, not from a customer.

For your first note: no passwords, nothing to install. I look from the outside and write you a real Friday note.

Wednesday

Sorry, quick one. Saw this last night and it's been bugging me. Sales were down 18% yesterday. Should I be worried?

08:40

No, you're fine.

Last Tuesday was your email launch, so it's a high bar. Yesterday's $27,900 was bang on a normal Tuesday for you.

Your cart's working. Last tested 6 minutes ago.

Visitors and ad spend were the same as usual, and people bought at the normal rate.

Nothing to do. If today looks low too, I'll tell you before you have to ask.

08:52

Ok that's a relief. Thanks

08:54

Anytime 👍

Heads up. Not urgent, but it's costing money.

Your VIP code, VIP20, has ended up on a coupon website. Since Monday it's been used 112 times by people who aren't on your VIP list. That's about $2,400 in discounts so far, and it's picking up speed. Some of those people would have paid full price.

What I'd do: switch VIP20 off, and make a new code that only works for people on the VIP list, so it can't travel. About two minutes. @Priya this one's yours if Sam's happy. I've put the steps in the thread.

Sam14:16

Yes go ahead. How does that even happen??

Haris14:19

Someone shares it, coupon sites pick it up automatically, and it spreads. Really common. A code tied to specific customers can't be used by anyone else, so it can't spread.

I checked your other live codes while I was looking. They're fine.

Priya14:32

Done. VIP20 is off and the new one goes in next week's VIP email

Haris14:35

Checked ✅ VIP20 no longer works at checkout. I'll make sure the new one is only being used by people on the list.

@Haris need to lock the Black Friday plan this week. What discount, and is there anything we're missing?

Haris09:40

Here's where I'd land, and why.

Discount: 25%, not 30%. Last year's 30% weekend brought in $412,000, but about a fifth came from customers who'd normally have bought in December at full price. 25% probably looks a bit smaller on the day and leaves more in the bank.

Stock: @Priya the Starter Bundle's covered, the new stock lands 2 November. Two others aren't. The black tee and the sock 3-pack run out before Cyber Monday at last year's pace. Both need ordering by 28 October. Numbers are in the sheet.

Site: @Dan no changes from 20 November to 2 December. If something really has to go live, send it to me first and I'll check it.

Ads: I'll send your agency last year's real numbers, so they plan off your orders, not their own reports.

Every morning of Black Friday week I'll post a two-line update here.

Sam09:52

25% it is.

Priya09:58

On it, ordering both today

Example conversations. Names and numbers are illustrative.

Friday notes come by email. Day to day, I'm in your channel of choice: Slack, WhatsApp, Google Chat or email.

Questions owners send me

The ones that feel too basic to ask anyone else.

Your numbers

"Why does every tool show a different number?"

Each one counts its own way, and most take credit for the same sale. Your store's orders are the truth. That's the number I give you.

Ads

"The agency wants another $10k a month for ads. Should I?"

Your call, but I'd wait. Each $1 brings back about $2.80 of real sales right now, which is a thin profit. More spend usually makes it thinner.

Email

"Email says it made 38% of our sales. True?"

It helped, but a lot of those people would have bought anyway. The real share is nearer 20%. Still your best channel for the money.

Subscriptions

"Is the subscription worth pushing?"

Yes. Subscribers spend about three times more over a year. But 2 in 5 cancel after their second delivery, so fix that before paying to get more.

Returns

"Why are returns up?"

One product. The crew neck tee in medium, and 19 of 26 return notes say "runs small". It's the size chart, not the quality.

Apps

"Do we need all these apps?"

No. Six of your 34 aren't doing anything, about $160 a month. Dan can remove them in an afternoon, and I'll check nothing breaks.

Pricing

"If we put prices up 8%, will sales drop?"

Your own history says probably not much. When the bundle went from $45 to $49 in March, orders per day didn't move. Try five products first. I'll tell you in two weeks.

Conversion

"Is a 2.1% conversion rate bad?"

No, it's normal for what you sell at your prices. The number I'd watch is phone shoppers who reach checkout and leave. Yours is higher than it should be.

Redesign

"The agency says we need a redesign. Do we?"

Not on the numbers. People find products and add to bag just fine. You lose them at phone checkout and on the size chart. Fix those two first, for a fraction of the cost.

AI shopping

"Do we need to do something about AI shopping?"

One small thing, not a project. AI assistants recommend products from your product details, and 40 of yours are missing sizes and materials. That's an afternoon for Priya.

Fraud

"Are we losing much to fraud?"

No. 14 chargebacks this quarter, $1,020 in total. Well within normal for a store your size. Nothing to change.

Board meeting

"Board meeting Tuesday. Which numbers can I actually trust?"

These five, checked, on Monday: real revenue, profit per order after ads and delivery, how many customers came back, cash sitting in stock, and where the quarter lands.

If it touches your store's money, ask me. No question's too basic, and you'll never get jargon back.

Want one about your store?

Do you still check the numbers late at night?

Most owners I work with do. Not because something's wrong. Because they're never quite sure nothing is.

Your store says one thing, your ad platforms say another, your analytics a third. Your agency says your ROAS is 4.1, and you nod, and quietly wonder whether that's good. Everyone reports on their own work. And the last time something broke, a customer probably told you.

What you get

A note every Friday

What really happened this week, what you can ignore, what's coming, and the one or two things that need you.

A message when it matters

If your cart stops working at 2am, the alert reaches you and whoever can fix it straight away, and I stay on it until it's working. Otherwise, it waits for Friday.

Someone to ask

Reply to any note, or message me in your channel of choice. Ads, subscriptions, returns, stock, speed, accessibility, pricing. Even the questions you'd feel silly asking anyone else.

A second opinion

Forward me any quote, report or plan, and I'll tell you straight whether you need it.

Why me, and not your developer

Your developer builds your store. My job is to watch it.

They're probably good at what they do. But they're busy shipping the next thing, they'd be checking their own work, and they only ever see your store. Nobody's job is to sit across all of it and tell you plainly what's going on. That's mine.

Your developerBuilds what you ask for
  • Builds and ships what you ask
  • Checks their own work
  • Sees your store
  • Speaks developer
Your storekeeperWatches all of it
  • Watches all of it, day and night
  • Checks the work, never touches the store
  • Sees several stores, so lessons travel
  • Speaks plain money

Like an accountant and an auditor. Different jobs, both worth having.

I've been the developer.

Five years building stores and fixing them at 2am, so I know where to look. One store found out its cart was broken because a customer emailed. Nobody knew how long it had been down. That's why I started this.

Lessons travel. Your data doesn't.

I look after several stores. When something breaks on one in the morning, I check the rest that day. Your numbers never leave your store. What travels is the lesson.

Tools run the checks. I sign the note.

Good tools check your store every few minutes, day and night, the same way every time. But I decide what goes in every note, I check it, and I put my name to it.

I never touch your store.

Everything I find goes to the right person on your team, early, with the evidence, and I check it's done. I make their job easier, not smaller.

Who's watching your store

The person who signs every note.

I'm Haris Mazhar, based in London. I've spent five years inside Shopify stores, building and fixing them for brands from their first launch to ones turning over millions a year. That's how I know where stores break, and what it costs when nobody notices.

Before that I was a brand specialist at Amazon, working with brands across Europe on the vendor side. It's where I learned to read a store the way an owner does: in sales, margins and stock.

The reviews below come from that building and fixing work. As your storekeeper, the same experience goes into watching your store, not working on it. I never touch it, and I'm never someone's developer and storekeeper at the same time.

What I promise

  • Nothing reaches you that I haven't checked and put my name to.
  • I'll tell you when things are fine. I won't invent problems to look busy.
  • I'll never sell you ads, a redesign or an app. My only job is to tell you what's really happening.
  • I'll never touch your store. I watch, I tell you, I tell whoever should fix it, and I check it's done.
  • If it's not useful, tell me and I'll stop.

Questions

Is this an AI tool?

No. It's me, with good tools. Automated checks watch your store around the clock and help me draft each note. I decide what matters, check the facts, and I'm the one accountable.

What access do you need?

For the first note, just your store's address. After that, collaborator access to your store, and a read-only seat on the tools you already use: your analytics, ad accounts, email tool and subscription tool. I need the full picture to do this properly. I use it to look, never to change anything, and you can remove it any time.

Where will I hear from you?

Friday notes come by email. Day to day, in your channel of choice: Slack, WhatsApp, Google Chat or email. Questions get an answer the same working day, and anything urgent straight away.

Why "from" $1,500?

Because stores aren't all the same size. $1,500 gets you everything I do. If you've got a bigger team, more than one store, or you'd like more of my time, we'll agree a price together first. No surprise invoices, ever.

Couldn't our own developer do this?

They could build some of it. But they'd have to stop building to do it, they'd be checking their own work, and they'd never see what's breaking on other stores. It's the same reason companies have an auditor as well as an accountant.

We already have a developer and an agency.

Good. I don't replace them. I make sure they hear about problems early, with the evidence, and I give you an independent view of how everything's going.

Will you fix things?

No, and that's on purpose. I tell the right person on your team, with the evidence, follow it until it's done, and check it afterwards. The person checking the work shouldn't be the one doing it.

What if you don't find anything?

Then you'll know your store's in good shape, from someone with no reason to say otherwise. That's worth knowing too.

Is my data safe?

It never leaves your store. When I learn something on one store, what I share with the others is the lesson, never your numbers.

How do I stop?

Just tell me. No contracts, no notice period games.

Send me your store's address.

I'll write you your first Friday note. If it isn't useful, you've lost nothing.

Rather talk first?

Book a 30-minute call.

Ask me anything about Storekeeper before you send your store's address. You'll get a straight answer, even if it's "you don't need this yet".
